Openly against genocide
This is so true

Apart from the goals we scored, we haven't scored

We're here to stand up for people who can't stand up for themselves. If a genocide doesn't cross some sort of red line, what are we even doing?

I hope that in 2025 I have the courage to take more risks and use more energy to speak out. I hope that I spend less time considering the personal and professional consequences for doing so. I hope that one other person is emboldened to do the same, and they in turn embolden another.

"Many of us like to ask ourselves, 'What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?' The answer is, you're doing it. Right now."

It would be simple to say that charities are just staying in their lanes. But how can failing to speak against the slaughter of children possibly be in alignment with any charity's values?

Continuing to arm a genocide, though, is the horror I will never forgive. I don't understand the quiet across the sector. I'm not excusing myself - I've not been vocal enough.

Even behind closed doors - unscientifically, I'm in a few charity WhatsApp groups and NONE of the above issues have been mentioned in any of them. Under the Tories, any old scandal would prompt a day's outraged chat. Why so quiet now?

How come the 'tough decisions' never seem to impact those who hold power and wealth? And why is the UK charity sector so timid in opposing these decisions?

I came to feel at home in the sector because it felt like coordinated anger against the injustice of austerity.

In 2024 the Government changed but injustice has not gone away - from taking away winter fuel payments, to betraying WASPI women, to refusing to lift the two-child benefit cap.
