I remember this but recalled it as the map showing the settlements was first found by the state employee. Settlements usually looked like small outposts so the difference was shocking to everyone. Source:
The Maps of Israeli Settlements That Shocked Barack Obama
An image in a government briefing book helped a State Department official see “the forest for the trees” in the West Bank—and then was shared with the President.

I don’t have a cite (sorry!) but I’ve seen much more detailed maps that show the fractal nature of the encapsulation of Palestinian habitation. It was like every paved road was excluded from Areas A and B.
I think the maps were made by Israel.

Genuine question, but what was so shocking to him about this map? I don’t really get what’s so shocking outside of if you never saw what Israel/Palestine borders look like (which I’ve been aware for basically as long as I can remember)

I don’t pretend to be well-informed even today, but most maps just show Gaza, the West Bank, and Golan as blobs. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I slipped into a mode where Gaza and WB were each uniformly more or less unfree. I too was shocked when I first saw a map of the archipelago.

The “settlements as dots” presentation is also an effective way to obscure the reality.

In other words the map combines the settlements, outposts, and all land which is controlled directly by the Israeli military via firing zone, de-development (banned for Palestinians altogether) and other uses.

Great Q.

Most maps showcase settlement as mere dots or lines— which in visual terms can serve to diminish the actual scope of control Israel exerts over land in the oPt. This map is showcasing all the land which Palestinians cannot develop on + all settlements, outposts minus Pal metro centers.

Basically, it was showing to Obama the extent of the control of the West Bank by Israel in its true form and not a simple dot on a map or statistics on a spreadsheet?

Anyway, thanks.

The bipartisan/centrist US politico type mental model on I-P is two states with the P state being what the map says is Gaza (they've memoryholed the blockade) and the West Bank, not that what's on offer is an open air prison and bantustans

Yes, an excellent book on this, and specifically how the idea of a sovereign second state has been gradually subsumed into the autonomy framework of Begin from 1978 to Netanyahu today is "Preventing Palestine" by Seth Anziska, really good structural history about Camp David, Oslo and today

and it does a good job of showcasing how over time the US legitimized at nearly every corner the Israeli preference of limited autonomy over sovereignty

It’s so unbelievably grotesque what they have systematically done to the Palestinian people on their own land. These people are truly the most premeditatedly evil in the world, and developing Gaza and plans for “Greater Israel” shows it.
