The Senate filibuster is adored when parties are in the minority and despised when parties are in the majority. If the filibuster could talk, it wants you to think long and hard before reforming it.

Interesting debate between @mattglassman312.bsky.social and @tompepinsky.com on a strategic shutdown. I come down on Matt’s side, but Tom’s point is well-taken: many Dem voters will be understandably furious if they think D’s aren’t doing enuf vs. Trump.
I can’t think of two better people to debate this than @jonathanbernstein.bsky.social & @mattglassman312.bsky.social. No one knows U.S. politics better than these two and they are the most strategic thinkers around (laudatory).
However, the argument against a shutdown is an argument for surrender.

My two cents on the "shutdown or not" debate. 1/x
Should Senate Democrats deliberately shut down the government to stop Trump? In his latest post at Mischiefs, Matt Green argues no. misofact.substack.com/p/not-the-hi...

What happens when societies polarize by partisanship? First the norm of mutual tolerance erodes, then institutional forbearance. The US case is textbook under Trump 2.0, explains @jenvictor.bsky.social

Partisan polarization destroys democracies. Here's how.
As polarization grows, partisans struggle to respect one another, then fail to show self-restraint. Loss of these norms erodes the institutions that create free societies.

The president helped get the bill across the finish line, but so did others – and Trump used tactics with lawmakers that are typical for presidents.
