Bird and butterfly watching often within walking distance of home in Peterborough. Occasionally escaping to the woods and hill country of south Shropshire.
The long staying Yellow-browed Warbler is still present at Ferry Meadows, Peterborough today. Also a Rook looking for somewhere to store an acorn.

Delighted to find this Firecrest in my Peterborough garden today! Seen calling in a back garden birch tree late morning before reappearing in a holly in the tree-lined hedge a few yards from my front door.

An adult Peregrine was seen chasing off a young male Goshawk in south Shropshire on Monday. Seeing Goshawk is often such hard work but throwing in a Peregrine too was special. Only the second time I've seen a Peregrine on Goshawk chase!

Trawled back through my diaries for previous Purple Emperor records at Southey Wood (following yesterday's sighting). I found two. 26th July 2014 and 20th July 2016. The 2014 record was possibly a site first or at least a first here in many years?

A big helping of excitement at Southey Wood, NW Cambs this afternoon. Male Purple Emperor, aberrant Comma, female Black Hairstreak, 2, possibly 3 White Admirals and approx. 6 Silver-washed Fritillaries made for a fun family walk!
June 22, 2025 at 7:16 PM
3 or 4 Black Hairstreaks were seen at Castor Hanglands NNR yesterday afternoon. Observed in another part of the wood that's often been a bit later for seeing them than the main area. Egg laying female noted low down in the windy conditions.

Black Hairstreaks took me by surprise today at Castor Hanglands NNR by being so abundant this early. 100+ seen in the northern section. There must be many more across the whole site. Emergence is normally a few days behind the better-known sites in the county. #blackhairstreak

A grey Sunday afternoon at RSPB Frampton Marsh was the expected bird-filled experience but without too many folk watching them. I had the 360 hide to myself for the time that I was in it. The Wood Sandpiper was an obvious highlight. A feeding Spoonbill too. #lincsbirding

Aurora Borealis at Ferry Meadows, Peterborough on 10th May 2024. A year ago today and one of my best ever days here! Calling Whimbrel and Coot overhead and several singing Sedge Warblers added to the wonderful atmosphere. #aurora #northernlights

A Bank Holiday trip to RSPB Titchwell Marsh was full of calling Sandwich Terns and fine pairs of Mediterranean Gulls. The latter has been a favourite of mine since finding an adult in a field at the back of my north Shropshire home in February 1988. #UKbirding

Finding 'rares' in the local area is more exciting but when you haven't managed that watching Red Kites isn't a bad back up plan! 8 seen worming again in a large field west of Peterborough, 12/04/25. Yellow Wagtail heard and a family of foxes seen nearby. #ukbirding
