🚨 Mail arrived! I bought this 1898 issue of Dentо̄ 傳燈 because of this essay by Hase Hо̄shū 長谷寶秀 (1869-1948), written at age 29. Looking forward to reading!

The world is one fire but seeing my youngest, a huge bug enthusiast, delight in the 13-year-brood cicada emergence is a personal salve. He’s spent the last week setting up “staring contests” and collecting probably more than 300 husks from our yard.

Been looking forward to this one!

🚨Just unpacked the Zaike gongyō hōsoku kōwa 在家勤行法則講話 (1928). The broad overview on lay oriented practices comprises chapter 5 and the rest is narrowly focused on go-eika 御詠歌, wasan 和讃, and raimon 禮文. The staples give me anxiety.

Another arrival! This is the Misshū anjin shō 密宗安心鈔 (1877) by Shaku Ryōki 釋良基, which explains the concept of anjin from several perspectives. It looks like it was once owned by a monk staying at Shōfukuji 勝福寺.

First arrival of 2024! This is the Misshū anjin shō kaitatsu ki 密宗安心鈔開達記, an 1889 reprint of the 1885 original. It is a recorded lecture given by Sasaki Yoshinori 佐々木義範 (1830-1878) along with a preface and some annotation.

Another fascinating entry in this 1901 issue, this time some guidelines to preaching that include reading Noah Webster (as in the dictionary) and rhetorician G.P. Quackenbos. What follows later are remarks on the diversity of dialects and listening practices across Japan.

This promulgation was part of a massive kyōgaku 教学 program, which included a reinvigoration of preaching models and standards. The entire 1903 publication can be found here: lab.ndl.go.jp/dl/book/8194...

Interesing letter to the editor (Chirei shimpō 智嶺新報 no. 8, 1901) on the state of preaching in the Shingon school at the turn of the century. I think the ordinance they refer to here was promulgated 1900 and then formally published in 1903 as 新義真言宗智山派宗規類篇.

Just had a short tour and lunch at the National Humanities Center, an absolutely beautiful research center tucked into the forest between Raleigh and Durham. Local and international scholars working on some really exciting stuff!

Swallowed this book in three days and can’t stop thinking about it. VERY uncanny vibes that reminded me a lot of Piranesi

Hattori Bankai, who was a key figure in this standardization, explains the significance of these wasan (in the Shingi case) in the Shingonshū zaike gongyо̄ hо̄soku wage 真言宗在家勤行法則和解 (1881):

New arrival: Zaike gongyо̄ hо̄soku sanwasan 真言宗在家勤行法則三和讃 (1913). These are the three key wasan deemed central to lay practice during Meiji-era efforts to better engage the lay populace: Kōmyō shingon wasan, Shingon anjin wasan, Kōbō Daishi wasan.

My first manuscript has arrived! This is the Go ruishо̄ nitsuki go hitan go sho 御類焼ニ付御悲嘆御書 (1864), which is a pair of recorded public lectures made by the late-Edo Shingon monk Jakumyо̄ 寂明.
