Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

One of the joys of travel for work is being able to squeeze in a few activities around it. Chicago in a couple of weeks so I’m heading to the Evanston Folk Festival. Should be fun.

Just back from a pretty special 10 days kayaking in Svalbard. Lots of polar bears. Mostly water was like a millpond, but a couple of choppy bits. Made it to almost 82 degrees north.

This is a pretty good analogy. I had a mate in my pub quiz team who always gave very confident answers. Sometimes it was a subject he knew a lot about. Sometimes nothing. Equally confident. Same energy with Gen AI.
AI in search engines is the equivalent of a mate on your quiz team who thinks he knows the answer but isn't sure.

Book recommendation for the techies… Afzal Mangal’s book about IoT and why we should still be talking about it, is a great read

Just arrived in the US. Stop-over in NYC now, off to San Francisco is the morning for Oracle analyst event, then back over to Philly for Sing Us Home Festival (a mighty fine line up), then a few days Appalachian Trail walking. Slightly challenging packing to go hand luggage only though.

Thought for the day: Why can’t Lars Ulrich regularly drum like he drums in the bridge and solo in One? It’s good. Rest of the song not.

Very sad that the Prince Charles Cinema is under threat. I've just signed this petition to save it. Didn’t help much with the 12 Bar or the India Club but there you go.

The term "physical metaverse". Discuss. While doing some research today around video analytics solutions used in various verticals I stumbled across a company referring to this. I think it broke my brain.

What’s that phrase? Ginger ale for my real friends, real ale for my ginger friends. Is that right?

Much as I like Spotify wrapped, it would be nice to be able to flag a song as “I have to learn this cover for my band”. Tends to skew things a bit. Good example here. Great song though.

One of the areas I get asked about a lot is why IoT never hit the predictions of 50 billion devices. Firstly those were overinflated predictions anyway, but there have been some stumbling blocks too. We discuss it in this session on the Peggy Smedley Show.

Last week we published a list of hot topics we think will be the most transformational in #IoT in 2025. A lot of #AI, a lot of regulation, a bit of #5G and a shake up in the connectivity provider landscape among them. As ever, happy to hear anyone’s thoughts…
