Bravely default, is also a really good example of a horizontal progression and vertical progression done right. It is telling that you are given options to speed up vertical progression but horizontal progression is treated as a major story beat

Other ways I like.Skill trees are often boring. I really enjoy is in old Zelda and Metroid games you found new abilities as you progress and use those to unlock new areas of the map, learning clever uses that always make you feel awesome. That is probably my favorite way to experience progression.

I always find horizontal progression more fun. New abilities are always more interesting than flat buffs to old ones for me. From a design perspective New abilities are expensive to create.

I wouldn't say 'better' or worse. Vertical progression vs. Horizontal progression really. You want a bit of both but this isn't the only way to do that
