One interesting follow-up to that piece. The SHED is actually a longitudinal survey. So you can follow people from one year to another. In 2022, 54% of SHED respondents said they had at least a three-month emergency fund. Here is how those people answered the survey 12 months later.

Yes it's the SCF's INCOME variable defined this way. They don't have a post-tax variable, though worth noting that post-tax income can actually be higher than pretax, especially for lower earners
