Retreat By Paul Brookes - December 12, 2025 3 The sanctuary was hidden deep in the glaucous forest, a place where the air smelled of earth and sky. Every tree seemed to hold secrets, their ancient bark etched with claw-carved symbols and stories older than memory. The leaves whispered as the wind stirred them-pages turning, feather-scribed in some forgotten language. The sky above mirrored the movement below, clouds trailing like long strands of cirrus pages, delicate and ever-changing. I stood there, at the threshold of this living, breathing library, my mind as wild as the forest around me. Each step I took felt as if I was plunging deeper into its mystery, the soft moss beneath my feet absorbing the weight of my thoughts. The ground trembled ever so slightly, as though the earth itself was exhaling, and the trees swayed, their branches moving in darkling curves that caught fragments of light. The sun filtered down through the thick canopy, refracted by the leaves, and it seemed as though letters of fire danced in the air, twining around my thoughts. The wind stirred again, this time more forcefully, and I inhaled its cool breath. With it came ideas-wild, untamed, as though carried from distant places on gusts too strong to ignore. Each gust seemed to blow a new thought into my mind, a seed carried on the wind, ready to take root. But the thoughts were not calming; they were quick and sharp, like a stone skipped across the surface of water. My retreat was never the peaceful escape I longed for. Instead, it bouldered through me, as if a stone had been hurled into the depths of my being, sending ripples that spread outward, endlessly forward. The tranquility of the forest belied the turmoil inside. Every thought that stirred in my mind felt like a fire being kindled-a spark catching dry leaves. It burned through me, bright and consuming, remaking everything in its path. My thoughts, once scattered like dandelion seeds, now took shape, reforming into something new and unfamiliar. And yet, amidst the flames, there was creation. The destruction brought forth growth-fresh shoots of ideas, sprouting and unfurling in my head. The fire remade me, and the sanctuary was not what it seemed. It was no longer a place of quiet reflection, but of transformation, where the very chaos of thought became fertile ground. I looked around once more at the forest, at the cirrus clouds, the bark-bright trees, and the earth that felt alive beneath me. The sanctuary was not still. It moved with the same force that propelled my mind, a constant shift from one form to another, like clouds becoming rain or flame turning to ash. This place-my retreat-was never calm. If you’re anxious abt #poetry submissions here’s a relevant but hard read

1) do your research on who you’re submitting to
2) prizes or an excessive publication list does not make a decent human being

If you’re a poet or writer anxious about submissions. Research before you submit. The other day I saw a call on another platform from an Ice publisher for submissions, I think on other worlds. Great guy I’m sure. His girlfriend & muse though, is the most toxic narcissist I’ve ever met. Back in Dec 2019 we connected on X & over 4 years she policed my every post excoriating every female creative I interacted with. The vindictive was humiliating and often racist. I blocked several times but she’d make up by email. She was unpublished back then and I took it that it was part her desperation to be a recognised & published author (a title she now uses) & part some kind of possessive jealousy. Turned out she was sexting & writing erotic novellas with the publisher muse for at least half time she spent policing me and raging that she would not be a ‘back up’. I didn’t understand what she meant but apparently narcissists accuse you of what they’re already doing. My humiliation’s fair enough, my problem, I should’ve walked away on day 2 after that first DM vent arrived about a poem I replied to by Lisa Alletson. Over four years on a site built for interaction any interaction I had with female creatives triggered an outburst. Examples ‘Old hag’ about a prompt host she used at the time ‘Old trout’ about a published poet ‘White bitches’ some poets in the US in a compilation she wasn’t selected for ‘Whores’ all women posting selfies on X Surprised she’s on Instagram, given her views; but maybe success & her muse mellowed her outlook. Maybe success will bring a form of equanimity to the new-found power of acceptance, or rejection. Not sure a leopard can change her spots, he will want to please his muse as well, but the point is here, before you submit to publishers, do some research. A long list of accolades or awards can be deceptive. Be careful who you bare your spirit to; in her case I’d expect ideas to be lifted (based on some private feedback) & the vitriol & contempt I witnessed doesn’t bode well for any rejection letter, which if it came, would offer precious little encouragement & likely intrinsic slight. If this saves a single writer then it’s worth it..

Eleven years and three quarters of an hour late two sons and a granddaughter said goodbye to the other half of Capt. JJ Guntrip’s ashes.

My daughter was dancing & auditioning in Europe during the funeral. We thought dad would want her to keep dancing. An honest mistake, so this day was cathartic.
