It appears that research universities are looking to enroll more undergraduates in the fall to help plug budget gaps created by research funding and international students. That creates new budget gaps farther down the higher ed food chain. finance.yahoo.com/news/elite-c...

And the hits keep coming. NSF just cancelled the Louise Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation grant at the CSU. Since its inception in 1993, CSU-LSAMP has served ~30,000 @calstate.bsky.social students (2000/yr), working to increase graduation rates & broaden participation in STEM careers. 🧪

The IPEDS survey submission site has been down all day with no explanation. Can't say that I've ever seen it down before, let alone for several hours 3 days before reporting is due. Not normal or efficient.

my actual unironic advice to undergrads is to major in something you're actually passionate about/interested in, and then try and *minor* in either CS or stats. you would be surprised how how much being the person who knows a substantive thing and can do some basic computer/stats stuff can pay off

Seems to me what we’re seeing across the federal government are the dividends being paid from years of adopting market language to talk about public goods. Run government like a business? Businesses exist to make profit. Government exists to serve the people. We’re about to see the difference now.

Hearing that nearly all the employees in the statistics agency inside the Education Department -- NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) -- have lost their jobs. Rumors that the NAEP test -- the nation's report card -- will no longer be run by NCES. This info is not confirmed.

When people want to talk to me about the backlash against US higher ed but don't want to mention racism, this is one of the key reasons I become very annoyed

(Also the data used to create this post had its contract canceled this month so are won't be able to track things like this in the future)
