Trees still have green in the protected areas of Streamside Path, where even in this dry season water flows and the "mountain" protects you from the sounds of nearby Route 128.

There is still color in November under the oaks, maples and white pines of Wilson Mountain. The understory at the top has small pines, red oak leaves and the painted tree marking the summit. #StateParkSunday

It's still beach weather in Nahant, where the warmer ocean can create a fog where it hits the colder air this year. There are still hints of summer left on this strip of land between the road and the sea, and paid parking ends Oct. 13. #StateParkSunday

It has pockets of wildflowers, stands of spruce, oak and pine, and of course, connections to conservation lands along the major hiking trails.

Don't sleep on Ashburnham State Forest. It's more than a stop on the Mid State Trail or a path to Mt. Watatic. #StateParkSunday

Note the trails are very well marked, maps are available at headquarters, where you'll find public bathrooms open near barbecue grills waiting for you in the shade.

For those seeking a quieter experience, check out the giant pine trees planted by the "Pinecone Johnnies," the former WWI veterans employed by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 397. Or find the stone structures in the forest believed to be used by pre-colonial residents.

If you're just starting mountain biking, F. Gilbert Hills State Forest is a perfect place to start. The main trails are wide and allow for some speed going downhill, but the paths are groomed enough to avoid hikers, dogs and wipeouts.

If you stop, just wear a hat, as there is little shade until you duck under the Red Line Train bridge.

There is limited free parking at Taylor and Water streets in Dorchester, but you can walk in from the North Quincy train station. Right now you can catch the bull thistles in bloom captivating the bees and bright yellow finches as you zoom past.

Senator Joseph Finnegan Park is 14 acres of parkland at the mouth of the Neponset River. A former paper factory, it's now a restored ecological habitat you can bike through. #StateParkSunday

You'll see lots of histories about its past, with amusement parks and dance halls, but it remains a spot on the ocean that is free to all. Bath houses are open weekends 7 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

America's first public beach, Revere Beach, sits waiting for you this summer-ending weekend. Its crescent shape runs for miles, framed by Nahant and Winthrop's peninsulas and accessible by a parkway designed by Charles Eliot. #StateParkSunday
