In addition to survey & clearance, Syria’s transitional government should urgently work to secure stockpiled landmines & weapons. It should issue an immediate directive prohibiting any new use of antipersonnel mines by any actor in the country - Ayman Sorour, ICBL

Scale of contamination from mines & explosive remnants of war in Syria is believed to be extensive. There’s some data from northeast of the country where MAG & others have operated for years but much more is needed.

Good question. Only 12 countries still produce antipersonnel landmines acc to @minemonitor.bsky.social: www.the-monitor.org/reports/land... United States last produced in 1997 & likely has very limited stocks left after transferring most of them to Ukraine in late 2024.
