The EPA and American Lung Assn. don't agree: are vehicle emissions worse near highways or near slower streets? And since there's so much disagreement, why would we summarily reject a highway-to-boulevard conversion without critical studies and modeling? (Blog post from 2017, updated 2023.)
Highway Air Pollution and Your Health: Six Things You Need To Know
Labor Day weekend is a prime time for vacations, which means many people will be traveling by car in the coming days. While everyone loves a good road trip, pollution near highways can have serious he

@governorwalz.mn.gov and staff, please pay attention to what's happening here. Thousands of Minnesotans are desperately trying to end the terrible health, economic and equity impacts of Interstate 94 on our loved ones and neighbors. @mndot.mn.gov is doing the least it can toward #RethinkingI94.
Let's talk about today's #Rethinking94 project update, happening now.

MnDOT Commissioner Daubenberger acknowledges receipt of the "at-grade alternative petition," hopes for "respectful dialogue" and "strongly believes we can advance real change in the corridor." Hates to disappoint.

I attempted a thread of today's #RethinkingI94 policy advisory committee meeting. It's a mess, but if you look at the pieces you will see some real heroic elected officials calling for a project pause; for solid environmental, economic and equity analysis; for neighborhood cancer studies & more.

This one's my favorite question for today.
3. Has MnDOT explored a slower speed parkway in the trench with housing/commercial/park development opportunities and multiple new bicycle, transit and pedestrian bridge reconnections over the trench? If not, why not?

Join the virtual MnDOT Rethinking I94 Policy Advisory Committee meeting at 12:30 CST. This is where we'll learn more about why they rejected an at-grade option. Should be lots of fun. Register below and consider asking a question or making a comment--this is an important audience of electeds!

Rand Paul on his healthcare plan: "What if you could join Costco? Costco has 44m members and if one person negotiated for all 44 and they bought a group plan like Toyota or General Motors does, they would be the largest collective entity in the country. They would drive prices down by sheer might."

Once again, the entirety of our weather coverage is related to driving conditions. It's often too wet, too slippery, too snowy, too dark, or too windy to drive. Cars and trucks are so obviously not universally effective transportation modes. We need alternatives.

Think hard about banning AVs. They actually do kill and maim fewer people. Instead, prepare a business plan for a nonprofit or publicly-owned AV system that minimizes private operator drawbacks--perhaps incl. offering jobs to former drivers. See HOURCAR and Evie as biz models w/community benefits.

So all the regular people think highways through Mpls and StP are fine--more or less essential to their lifestyles. And they never think about the neurological damage being done by highway traffic on the daily to our children, and our lack of growing tax base, and if they do they're monsters.

Do Interstates through cities (not around, not between) = WEALTH EXTRACTION from city residents?

Sure, some companies still do business here and many of their employees commute in by highway, but start paying attention to what I-94 did/does to your overall tax burden in Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
Drove back from cabin country along 94. When I see brand new corporate campuses in the exurbs while dt office space is going for pennies, it is clear that even the intended role of interstates has been flipped. These remove wealth & jobs from the places where the benefits of both can be maximized.

Let's have a serious chat about car dependency. Way too many people at a city DFL event today told me they couldn't imagine removing the interstate highway that cleaves their city in two, poisons its generations and ruins the tax base, ensuring jobs and critical services are sited elsewhere.

I really like dfl endorsed candidate Meg Luger-Nikolai. Clearly competent and well supported. Very welcoming to new concerns and ideas. The whole mostly lovable gang is staying in the race. This 64a primary is going to be quite a banger.
meg luger-nikolai is unanimously endorsed by voice vote for 64A

#Rethinking94 alert 🚨
Lois Quam leads with her strong support of a reimagined highway as has demonstrably succeeded in other cities.

Everyone else supports expansion or a "land bridge."

I've heard enough. Lois Quam for 64A!

Bravo to Minnesota State Sen. Jim Abeler. This letter expresses sentiments that needed to be said by a MN Republican. Water needed to be thrown on the anti-Somali fire before someone gets hurt. We can fight fraud without condemning an entire community. #mnleg

I haven’t finished reading it yet, because my eyes are blurry with tears. I’m not sure if I’ll ever be in the forest on a fully packed bike again, but my e-bike allowed me to traverse the cities and cruise the river again. There’s magic everywhere when on a bike, and I am so grateful.
I wrote about #LongCOVID stealing my lifelong favorite hobby of cycling, learning that e-bikes aren't "giving up" or "cheating," and how riding with assistance gave me back one of the greatest joys of my life. bit.ly/48ohIH5

B Line enthusiasts! Charming craft show this weekend at downtown Saint Paul's gorgeous Landmark Center. Seal the trip with a cocktail or oysters or amazing frites at Meritage, perhaps. Or visit Mickey's Dining Car! Ride to the Rice Park Station, adjacent. My city is lovely by BRT. 🌲

Ok, @startribune.com, you reveled in publishing exceptionally unflattering photos of former mayor Hodges. Now you're doing it to Mary Lucia, too? Cmon, I want to support career journalism but you must do so much better.
