Did you know that you can get trained in IUCN Red List assessment for free online?

I have my undergrads do this as a semester-long assignment to understand policy-relevant science. You can do it too! 🧪🦑🌎

Someone asked me why sharks stick their dorsal fins out of the water. The answer is simple.

Sharks’ dorsal fins stick out of the water sometimes because their fins are on top of and therefore higher than the rest of their body, and sometimes their body is near the surface of the water.

A fun video from OR Dept Fish and Wildlife for the last day of wolf week (I missed the rest of the week🤦🏼‍♀️)

Dispersal is such an important part of wolf population expansion but hard to do justice explaining to people. ODFW nailed it though and in cinematic style 😍

Give it a quick watch!

You will be shocked, shocked to hear that "The Theory That Men Evolved to Hunt and Women Evolved to Gather Is Wrong"! 🙄 Duh! OF COURSE IT'S WRONG. But now there's a cool article listing the biological and evidentiary reasons, along with nifty diagrams.

There is no cookbook that tells you how to do a "correct", objective statistical analysis. 🧪
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

There’s a new species of shark or shark relative (ray or chimaera) discovered somewhere in the world about every two weeks.

This thread makes me so happy
As an interdisciplinary scientist, I've always enjoyed listening to people describing how they do science. So, in a few words, how would you awkwardly describe your field ?

For me, I'm reading past climate by reducing to powder marine mollusc's fossils. How about you ?

Did you know I had a new book out this year? The Naturalist at Home: Projects for Discovering the Hidden World Around Us.

You can learn to cook a beer mix to attract moths, dig up some mud to make a microbial garden or squeeze moss to find tardigrades.
