Over 50 people came last night to our first ever Artist Salon, which I modelled after Gertrude Stein.

Interesting conversation, laughter, and actually seeing people's facial expressions. What a night!

Hope to see you on the 16th April or any others you can make... bring friends.
Last night I went to a salon style meet up at the Suffield Arms in Norfolk; it is free and open to any artists, writers, filmmakers, poets, photographers, etc to come and just converse. It was so good and I met many people I'd heard of or follow on insta, but not met. One a month over the summer.

As Vance 'lectures' Europe on free speech, it is good to be reminded that the United States ranks 55 (!) on the World Press Freedom Index.

The top 10 countries are ALL in Europe.

Trump’s attempted impoundments are a claim to presidential control of legislation, and so if allowed would undo a very fundamental principle of the Constitution. Read this.

120. The Impoundment Crisis of 2025
The Trump administration's Monday spending freeze is likely to provoke a crisis over the constitutionality of "impoundment"—one that the justices could well have to resolve *very* soon.

Doing a whole bunch of illegal things to expand executive power with a pliant legislature fawning as he breaks the law is what authoritarianism looks like. This is how it starts.

Everything in the news is terrible. Without minimizing those events (they are terrible), it’s also important to zoom out: here’s why the world isn’t as bad as you think—and why the news aggregates every bad event while failing to cover positive trends.
Why the world isn't as bad as you think
News coverage is terrible at capturing the biggest good news stories: the long-term trends that show vast improvements in human living standards across long stretches of time. We need to fix that.

Didn’t make the cut for The Dundies™ this year, but apparently my dulcet vocal tones aren’t *quite* like fingernails on a chalkboard, as FLUKE has been chosen as a finalist for an Audie award (billed, somewhat grandiosely, as the “Oscars for audiobooks”).

Jimmy Carter has died. I wrote about one of his less well-known but arguably most important achievements: saving millions of the world’s most vulnerable people from debilitating disease, blindness, and death. www.forkingpaths.co/p/jimmy-cart...
Jimmy Carter's Hidden Legacy
Carter's post-presidency was transformative. And while he's well-known for his contributions to democracy, he deserves immense credit for his incredible successes with global public health.

Fluke, by @brianklaas.bsky.social, has been my bedside table read for a few weeks now, as its dense, and I often have to re-read phrases to let them sink in. It's utterly compelling and is changing how I see the world.
