Admission is also free! But, if you give a donation and have kids in tow, they give some food to feed the fish in the tropics part of the botanical garden. Totally worth it if you are in town!

Was embarrassed to have never been after being here so many years - Rawlings Conservatory definitely lives up to the hidden gem definition, especially the Orchid Room 🤩

Just the regular!

An individual common milkweed seed pod has about 200 seeds. Thinking about the many tens of thousands of seeds me and the wind are conspiring to release in the next few weeks is a pleasant thought ;) #NativePlants 🌱

These images of a tissue block face are part of an ongoing effort to map the molecular neuroanatomy of human 🧠 basal ganglia & basal forebrain structures at high resolution 🔬🧪. You can totally get lost staring at these - human 🧠 organization is fascinating.

Both the leaves 🍁 and the berries are amazing on Viburnum nudums in Fall. Birds love these berries so much though that they are often completely picked over by the time color changes #NativePlants 🌱

Panicled Aster (Symphyotrichum lanceolatum) still popping out blooms solidly into Fall. #NativePlants 🌱

Double posting for #FluorescenceFriday today, because I am in love w/ this particular astrocyte (marked w/ GFAP in 🔴) that is sitting in dorsal anterior cingulate cortex in the human 🧠. Image credit to Staff Scientist/image analyst Maddy Tippani and JHU grad student @shkwon-bcmbneuro.bsky.social 🔬🧪

After a few days of gray, wind and rains from the storm, very pretty sunrise this morning was a welcome respite 🌅

Super excited about this ongoing spatial transcriptomics study in locus coeruleus of human 🧠. Expression of norepinephrine neurons - TH🔴, DBH🟢 and SLC6A2🟡 overlaid on post-Xenium H&E stain, allowing correlation of neuromelanin content (brown pigment) w/ gene expression #FluorescenceFriday 🔬🧪

Also, re: the glossiness of those berries - yes, it is really striking. I have a Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) right near that plant also with amazing fruit set this year, but with them close together struck me how glossy the Chokeberry was.

Tiny first touch of Fall 🍂🍁

Fruit set on the Red chokeberries (Aronia arbutifolia) was excellent this year, leaving lots of these glossy red berries. #NativePlants 🌱

I call it High tide bush - lots of names though - Groundsel tree, Salt bush, sea-myrtle (Baccharis halmifolia), but whatever you call it, it’s characteristic wispy blooms are a sure sign of Fall’s approach #NativePlants 🌱

For #FluorescenceFriday - simple image, but structure of hippocampus is beautiful with additional fanfare. 🟢 is Fos - labeling cells that get activated in response to disinhibition of inhibitory neuron subpopulation in the prefrontal cortex. Image credit to JHU Neuroscience student Aaron Salisbury.
