Worth remembering that the French carried out the first raids on Berlin in June 1940 using a Farman NC 223.4 that, improbably, still used pusher props.

Public Spaces Protection Orders have been used previously to achieve that aim – see Tossici-Bolt for example.

Defaming a lawyer is a bold move - I think Starmer should just sue Tice and Sky seeking damages and a public retraction.

Citing an unrelated corporate and regulatory failure from 70-odd years ago is a pretty glib response.

Not only did thalidomide change people’s lives, but it resulted in tighter drug testing and reporting of side-effects.

Salient omissions include:
“JTAC assesses that PAG commits or participates in acts of terrorism”, “is involved in preparing for terrorism” and “has promoted terrorism”; that the “Support for terrorist groups” section is redacted; and there is no mention of the injuries sustained by its victims.

The Malay Peninsula too - apparently they had their origin in the eyes painted on the bows of boats by local ethnic Chinese seafarers of Fujian descent.

Of course Connolly’s is not an isolated case, so their near silence regarding the many others sentenced for similar offences is curious.

True.
August 18, 2025 at 8:55 PM
I became more sanguine about that after learning more about the Elbit incident last year, and that the CPS had indicated an intention to ‘submit to the court that these offences have a terrorist connection’. The Govt might have been better advised to have waited upon the Court.
August 18, 2025 at 8:54 PM
My first instinct was that the Govt overreacted to the Brize incident and the matter should have just been pursued through the courts. Technically, if not politically, they have applied the Terrorism Act correctly, and received the overwhelming support of both Houses of Parliament.

Yes, but what would be the reaction of those unsupportive of PA being told by prominent people that their rights have been curtailed and seeing PA ‘supporters’ being taken away by the busload? Could they be deterred?
August 18, 2025 at 7:56 PM
Maybe, but I have no special insight into the Govt’s cynicism - granted their dilatory response to Laura Murton’s experience may lean into that view.

The simpler point is that people are free to protest and the overreaching by Kent police was criticised by a High Court judge.
August 18, 2025 at 7:53 PM
The quote is from Dan Jarvis, the Minister for Security, so can reasonably be taken to represent the Govt’s position, and is consistent with Mr Justice Chamberlain’s reported critical remarks re Laura Murton.
August 18, 2025 at 5:29 PM
This proscription does not deny “the right to express and read dissenting opinions” and by asserting that it does, as the BBC reported, may risk misleading people about their actual right to protest.
August 18, 2025 at 5:29 PM
I don’t think anyone comes away from this fiasco looking too well, but it would be ironic if Rooney’s mischaracterization of the law were to discourage lawful protest.

One of the main problems with UK broadcast news/current affairs is its overreliance on live talking heads. Politicians too often get to spout their nonsense without effective scrutiny, with complex issues reduced to sound bites.

As you may know, on Churchill’s orders both were seized by the Royal Navy in the Faroe Islands as part of a larger Swedish flotilla. Shortly after, following Swedish protests, the flotilla was released and given safe passage only to be bombed by an RAF Hudson in error – fortunately they missed.

Which is why I think proscribing PA was right. The difficulty though is the knock-on effect of criminalising speech that “supports” PA: even ignoring some stupid but predictable over-interpretations of that by the police, there is a problem here and the legislation may well need looking at.
In the recent interim judgment on the proscription order, the judge helpfully summarised the govt’s position.

It is not obviously stupid to call this terrorist.
