An opinion poll released yesterday by the Asahi Shimbun gives a glimpse into the damage that Trump has done to America's image in Japan, its closest Asian ally. The first question asks whether Japan should follow U.S. in foreign policy. 24% say yes, but 68% say no, Japan should show more autonomy.

The hotel's interior was like entering another era.

It was like entering a maze. To reach your room, you had to ascend a steep stairwell, pass through a narrow corridor, turn a couple corners, go up and down small flights of stairs to enter a little alcove that held the door.

A sign at Naha airport proclaims the terminal to be a tsunami hazard zone at 8 meters above sea level. Not very reassuring given that the 2011 Tohoku tsunami was almost twice that high, and there's historical evidence of an even larger wave striking Ishigaki in the same Ryukyu island chain...
