From Salerno to Naples there's even a "treno altra frequenza" that runs about seven times a day, only some of them at the same minutes past the hour, the others at seemingly random intervals...

4. From foggy Lugano we travelled by regional train to Milan. By far the slowest part of the journey, but we were relaxed and had plenty of space in both Lugano and Milan for the transfer. 5. Then by swish Frecciarossa all the way to Salerno, in 5½ hours. All in all, we spent 8+9 hours on trains.

We stayed the night in Schaffhausen through AirBnB - in someone's actual house, not the usual commercial venues. Three rooms and a kitchen, on a nice hilltop. 3. The next day, we used an old trick to travel cheaply through Switzerland: with a DB-bought ticket starting in Singen, to Lugano.
