"There is no realistic prospect that a sitting President will be compelled to appear in Georgia to stand trial on the allegations in this indictment," wrote Peter Skandalakis, a supervising prosecutor who assigned himself the case after failing to find another district attorney to take it over. "Donald J. Trump's current term as President of the United States of America does not expire until January 20, 2029; by that point, eight years will have elapsed" since the alleged crimes in question. "Given the complexity of the legal issues at hand - ranging trom constitutional questions and the Supremacy Clause to immunity, jurisdiction, venue, speedy-trial concerns, and access to federal records — and even assuming each of these issues were resolved in the State's favor, bringing this case before a jury in 2029, 2030, or even 2031 would be nothing short of a remarkable feat," Peter Skandalakis, the prosecutor on the case, wrote Wednesday. State prosecutor Peter Skandalakis moved to drop the case against Trump and his remaining co-defendants "to serve the interests of justice and promote judicial finality."
