The CJEU has ruled that Member States cannot prosecute asylum-seeking mothers who travelled on false documents with their children as people smugglers - in a judgment with broader implications for the criminalisation of immigration.

Based on this fast and excellent WaPo reporting, these four guys are not gang members, just Venezuelan dads who came to the US to work. They’re now being paraded in shackles in El Salvador www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...
For four Venezuelan friends, Alien Enemies Act cuts short an American dream
President Donald Trump used the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans accused of being gang members. Relatives of men sent to El Salvador deny the allegation.

My 3-year-old daughter:
- says 'lovely' for everything.
- refuses to put her gloves on whatever the weather.
- loves 'pudding' after 'tea'.
- corrects my pronunciation.
- assures me I'm 'most welcome'.

Her parents were not born in the UK.

My daughter is English.

And Suella Braverman is wrong.
Suella Braverman has written this: "For Englishness to mean something substantial, it must be rooted in ancestry, heritage, and, yes, ethnicity."

As someone who, like Suella herself, has very little "English" ethnicity in their DNA, I would like to say that Suella can, to put it bluntly, fuck off.

🧵UK immigration department culture

I’ve litigated against the dept for most of last 33 years, reading civil service files & witness statmts, sometimes talking confidentially to them. For almost 8 yrs, I sat on Gov Committee that writes rules for immigrt’n appeals & so consults directly with them 1/
There’s *awful* stuff in the Home Office; I’d like to identify who’s responsible.

Civil servants do what the elected government tell them to; they’re non-political. If we want to politicise the civil service (to do good things) we also have to accept the possibility of radicalisation the other way.

On June 2023 , the Adriana, a fishing trawler, capsized, leading to the death of more than 600 people.

In its investigation, the Greek Ombudsman has concluded that Greek authorities acts and omissions to rescue constitute criminal offences.

Survivors are still waiting for justice & accountability.
The Greek Ombudsman published a damning report into the actions of the Greek coastguard during the shipwreck in Pylos.

@amnesty.org welcomes these crucial findings.

Greece must take them into account in their investigations into the incident & finally open disciplinary investigations🧵

Truly hope the images of starved & tortured freed detainees, some of whom can’t recall their name or haven’t had news from outside world in decades, haunt those who kept claiming Syria was safe / pushed for refugees’ return. Though that would assume baseline for morality / expectation of remorse.

Thinking about those slaughtered, imprisoned, tortured; those who were made disappear; those who were forced to flee, those whose lives were shattered by the regime, who had to endure the separation of family members.

More by Amnesty on the genocidal intent in its #GazaGenocide report. Usually, the special intent / dolus specialis part is hardest to establish in court because it has to be inferred from conduct: genocidaires seldom state their intent explicitly. It may be different this time.
