Building a habit of always using semantic elements took me a hot minute, but has proven really valuable in helping shape the way I think about presenting content. And not just for screen reader users either, it’s fundamentally improved the experience for everyone.

So very true. Each part of the system should be considered in how it is actually having an affect on a person's experience - both digitally and physically. Accessibility shouldn't be an extra layer. It’s just design done right to begin with.

After thinking it through, it makes total sense. Sure, a negative tabindex removes the element from the tab focus flow, but then it also makes the element itself focusable when interacted with. Which is 100% the opposite of what I was trying to do to begin with.

One sticker, artfully placed in the bottom corner so that I can decide which crowd I’d rather be a moderate outlier of at a moment’s notice.

Ahhhhhh, gotcha. Still massively disappointing, but not at the level of ineptitude I had thought.
