It's almost as if Groningen is a big city... Pretty morning skies near the Euroborg #stoker #brander

I just wrapped up my first 20km. It was rather wet and windy, but the skies cleared as the sun rose. My first stop Annen in Drenthe. Home to some 3600 people, it boasts the largest grass brink, or village square in Europe (and there's also dolmen inside the village)!

Yesterday we celebrated, but today is the real day: it's Kitty's birthday! Woo-hoo!

(our six-year-old niece had arranged the fireworks on Kitty's desert all by herself - by asking the staff - as a surprise she didn't really manage to keep a secret ;))

Spring has been making a strong effort these past weeks. The storks are back, I saw my first brimstone last week, and just now an oystercatcher poking his beak into the ground on the side of the road.

Playing movie soundtracks. Turns out the Spotify progress bar turns into a light saber when Duel of the Fates plays.

Just got home, and now this is my view...

January's already been a good month for new music. Among my favourites are Sarah Jarosz' Polaroid Lovers, Brittney Spencer's My Stupid Life, and especially Lizzie No's Halsies (already a contender for albumof the year in my book).

They're selling prehistoric globes at Wildlands (and yes, New Zealand is missing too) :p

It's this lovely lady's birthday! Woo-hoo!

4: Vincent Neil Emerson - The Golden Crystal Kingdom

A pure country record, in music and topic, but it’s a rock solid one, rooted in tradition and at the same time fresh.
December 28, 2023 at 9:49 PM
5: Slaid Cleaves - Together Through the Dark

A wonderful gem of an album with more than a few amazing and moving lyrical finds.
December 27, 2023 at 6:33 PM
6: Joy Oladokun - Proof of Life

A very rewarding record that is a joy, no pun intended, to listen to.
December 26, 2023 at 10:12 PM
7: Rhiannon Giddens - You're the One

A fine introduction to the fascinating person that is Rhiannon Giddens.
December 26, 2023 at 12:13 AM
Number 8: William Prince - Stand In the JoyOne of the finest albums to play on a warm summer evening, early fall morning, or basically any moment that calls for some quiet reflection on what we have.
December 24, 2023 at 8:19 PM
Number 9: Peter One - Come Back To Me

Come Back To Me is a varied album, laidback, at times optimistic or melancholy.

On my other social media I've been sharing my 100 favourite albums of 2023. Repeating the exercise is a bit much, so I'll limit myself here to the top 10. One album a day until New Year's Eve

10: Susanne Sundfør – Blómi

A wonderful, almost magical album that doesn’t fail to be moving.

My sister showed me this photo of me meeting her for the first time. November 1981. Wasn't I cute? 😁

It was a short run this year. I'm already in Whamhalla... Whamageddon struck me yesterday.

Dori Freeman- Do You Recall

Fragile yet confident, Freeman sets her own standard with this release.

Semisonic - A Little Bit Of Sun

Expertly-crafted comeback.

My last monthly overview of the previous month's releases. Next month I'll try and whip up my list of the year's best albums.

The standouts:

Vincent Neil Emerson - The Golden Crystal Kingdom

A new Emerson album is something to look forward to, and the storyteller does not disappoint.

In a way, it's a miracle that he made it to 65. Another miracle is that Shane MacGowan became the lyricist he was despite the distractions and obstacles life threw at him.

Always funny how Spotify Wrapped is never what you expect. In the Air Tonight? I guess...

Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem making it into my Top 5 is only right though.

Waarom?
