Author, dad, journalist at Mother Jones/CIR. My book TRIGGER POINTS is the story of expert teams who are preventing mass shootings, from K-12 schools to the FBI https://www.amazon.com/dp/0062973533/
2/ This section deep into the Blaze story on the alleged pipe bomber they name really gives away the game... (Notably, the lead author himself pleaded guilty to crimes at the Capitol on Jan. 6, as Sommer details in his above piece)

"Taki Allen was sitting with friends after football practice on Monday afternoon when armed police officers suddenly surrounded him. He says the officers pointed their weapons, ordered him to the ground, and detained him — a moment he says left him shaken and afraid for his life." [2/x]

“Peter Giunta, former chair of the NY Young Republicans, who referred to Black people as “watermelon people” and “monkeys” and said, at another point, “I love Hitler,” is 31.”

Also, as @juliannemcshane.bsky.social notes, the bleak irony of Vance doing this charade on the Charlie Kirk Show 👉🏻

Pregnant women of America must feel great relief that Donald Trump isn’t their doctor

So now that the Trump White House denies that Homan ever accepted the $50K, and Patel and Bondi shut down the investigation, how about the radical transparency they keep righteously vowing? Why not release the undercover footage of the alleged Homan bribe? www.msnbc.com/msnbc/news/t...

In America, anyone is free to make a stupid joke, even if the joke is factually wrong and makes some people feel very mad. The government cannot censor it using threats and intimidation. This right is enshrined in the constitution. That’s the point of this stupid joke from JD Vance, yes?

My reported essay also dives deep into some disturbing new developments with online radicalization that go far beyond the terrain covered in “Adolescence”—an evolving danger that is fueling school shootings, political assassinations, and more. www.motherjones.com/media/2025/0... 2/x

Sometimes photos absolutely do tell the story most powerfully.

Try to comprehend children fleeing a mass shooting. Try to imagine you're the parent sprinting barefoot to find yours.

Two executive orders from Trump “drew on language and ideas about immigrants that echoed statements made by violent extremists who attacked Hispanics in El Paso, the Black community in Buffalo and Jews in Pittsburgh.” www.nytimes.com/2025/08/23/u...

“Relatable” is the question? Well, in any case it’s not hard to see the desolation at the core of this story. Also the reporter evidently is not from San Francisco and WSJ really needs a factchecker—the Golden Gate Bridge is nowhere near the Ferry Building, folks www.wsj.com/style/fashio...

Notably, in 1943 the U.S. military was not deployed at home under phony pretense but instead was busy fighting fascism overseas

2/ The shooter “appeared to have had a long-brewing fixation about the [Covid] vaccine, according to a senior law enforcement official…the man believed the shot had been the cause of his physical illness. The man’s father had reported him to authorities earlier on Friday, saying he was suicidal”

5/ Sure seems like a textbook case for a red flag law removing access to guns. Nevada has one. Why didn't local police or EMS seek to use it here? (Lack of training and clarity on the law is a common problem. Also there's sometimes a political chill against using it...) www.wsj.com/us-news/poli...

“Any fair-minded mental-health expert would be very worried about Donald Trump’s performance"

“What we see are the classic signs of dementia, which is gross deterioration from someone’s baseline and function"

And why did the White House get rid of official transcripts of his remarks? Here's why 👉

Ghislaine Maxwell Moved to Minimum-Security Women’s Prison in Texas... apparently no one ever told Trump the thing about how to get out of a deep dark hole by first putting down the shovel www.nytimes.com/2025/08/01/u...

Trump spoke with Eric Adams about the shooting… which also is a reminder that Trump refused to speak with Gov. Tim Walz—and insulted him—after a Trump supporter went on a gun rampage in June in Minnesota, where the murder victims included the former state house speaker.
