Our #UMAP2025 paper contains implications for:

1️⃣ Graph literacy aware adaptive nudges and dashboards.
2️⃣ Combining nudges to maximise their effect.
3️⃣ Using customisations to build user models.

Although the nudges did not significantly increase customisation uptake, some of them improved overall usability, particularly for users with low to moderate graph literacy. Interestingly, for users with high graph literacy, these same nudges had a detrimental effect #UMAP2025

Our previous work shows that while customisation can enhance dashboard usability, users are often reluctant to engage with it. In our latest #UMAP2025 paper, we report an experiment with five nudging strategies designed to persuade users to use customisations

We give advice on building user models that inform:
1️⃣ the introduction of timely and beneficial customisations
2️⃣ interventions for struggling users
3️⃣ the design of adaptive dashboards that balance user-driven customisation with system-driven personalisation

Short-term customisations enhance dashboard usability but only when engagement is meaningful and not exploratory. Ephemeral interactions (<5 secs) are detrimental for usability and may increase cognitive load. Customisation should be handled with care. OK, but how? #iui2025 doi.org/10.1145/3708...

While we have learnt that usability is predictable through interactive behaviour, we explore whether short-term customization of dashboards is a promising avenue to address usability problems. We'd like to answer: is it worth encouraging the use customisations? The answer is 'yes but...' #iui2025
