On both occasions the spills ran for about two months before the company sent contractors to stop them and contain the pollution. Both spills were caused by corrosion to the Trans Niger Pipeline, which carries crude from oil fields scattered across the Niger Delta to the coast.

An important environmental justice case underway in London today. At the Royal Courts of Justice, Laz Tamana of the Bodo community explained why the community is taking Shell to court over what they allege has been its failure to clean up two massive spills in 2008.

Shell refuses to clean up pollution from King Bebe Okpabi’s home town in Nigeria. As a result people have to drink poisoned water. That’s why they’re suing the company in London.
