You do not need an algorithm for social media to work.

These screenshots are from a recent thread that I posted to Mastodon - a federated social media platform with no algorithm whatsoever. Posts get shared only through users following, replying to, and resharing them.

Best marketing approach? Love.

Think of the first time you touched the sleek metal of a MacBook or heard the soulful cry of a rock song.

Recall how you felt – the tingling of your toes, the soft ringing of your heart.

Do you feel it? A part of your soul just came to life for the very first time.

A large part of the #marketing SaaS and tool/software economy is based on marketers generally paying for things they think they need, but really don't.

"AI" is a catch-all term for any algorithm I can't explain
I'm sick of 'AI' being a moral question when it has such an imprecise and broad meaning. I hate it when my co-workers ask me if I think AI is good or bad when it's a term used to refer to everything from Midjourney to AlphaFold to the fucking TikTok algorithm.

If any new marketing people are joining – hi, I'm a B2B tech marketer.

I run an agency; specialize in content, organic growth, audience research, and earned media. I also write really emotional pieces that are still somehow about marketing (supposedly). And I make funny faces, a lot.

If we want our traffic to convert to sales or higher brand awareness, we must improve our content past “good enough.” Here’s why.

My new piece for Search Engine Land goes deeper into what I mean + practical frameworks for how to improve your content quality. 🧐

Please support striking workers in the way they’ve asked for. Instead of a viewer boycott, which they haven’t asked for, can you commit to donating to the strike fund, which they have? Maybe an amount equal to what you pay for streaming each month, for even one of the streamers, if not all?
I think we should be talking about a viewer's strike right now. Cut off the streaming services at least, until an agreement is reached with WGA and SAG. Maybe no movies as well? What do you think?

Hi friends!

I launched a podcast yesterday. It’s an accompanying show to my newsletter, “Attention Deficit Marketing Disorder” (or ADMD).

The first episode is about Meta’s Threads and the loneliness that social media can cause for all of us.

Find it on Substack, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify!

I really don’t know what is gonna happen with Threads. It feels stagnated, which is a very strange thing to say of a brand new social media platform. But because everyone just kind of ported their existing Twitter habits and a lot of their preexisting following… that platform doesn’t FEEL new

I do wonder how much having a presence on brutally algo-driven places like Facebook, Insta, and new Twitter actually *is* helping 99% of creators get noticed nowadays, vs just tricking us into *thinking* it’s helping.

I can tell y’all that I am coming back to Bluesky for the memes.

This place has the best memes out of any Twitter alternatives and I’m on most of them at this point 😅

I said this a year ago elsewhere, but I’ll say it again here: It's impossible to overstate how much the big tech CEOs & VCs are being radicalized within their bubble. The level of paranoia & contrived victimization is off the charts, and they increasingly only consume media that they have funded.

I want to tell you a story about how I, a marketer with a small social media following, accidentally blew up Mastodon with some war reporting. And what the internet might look like on the other side of dying legacy social media.

LinkedIn's new algorithm is so broken right now I literally spent 30 minutes today trying to find a single thing to comment on or like.

It's bad out there, guys.
