I got our baby Minsk from a co-worker who had a cat colony living in her trailer park; he's a lovely floofy boy. Still staying with our friends rn while we battle a persistent flea infestation. I miss him.

He wasn’t *lost*; even a camping novice like himself could clearly see the lines of squashed shrubbery and muddy drag-marks of the rescue sled where he’d brute-forced it along the forest floor. Not *more* lost, anyway. Nor freezing to death; cold, yes, but his breath didn’t cloud up before him and there was no frost on the leaves underfoot, and even his careful tread was brisk enough to maintain his core temperature. But it was cold, uncomfortable, and massively silent, and Stede felt as alone as if he were in orbit. He tried, as he walked, to remember when he had last been alone, beyond short nights spent crashed out in his little Wellington bedsit in between classes. There had been long hours at the university library, but even there had been footsteps, hushed voices, occasional throat-clearings or sneezes splitting the air. The presence of humanity, even when it was not directly interacting with him. And it had been the same in London; he would sequester himself in his home library for hours, trying not to burden his family with his awkward and unwelcome presence, but at the edge of his hearing there was always the sound of the children running, playing, fighting, watching brightly colored cartoons with infectious music. Sometimes at night, with Mary off in her own room (due to his restless sprawling) and the children fast asleep, he had felt almost this alone. Not so cold, except in his heart; not at risk, except in his soul.
