Written in 1970 and unpublished until now, this “lost novella” from Elmore Leonard (1925–2013) finds the author continuing a transition from Westerns to contemporary crime fiction. The story, which involves a clash between a Texas melon farm owner and a violent union operator, is vintage Leonard: the writing is unadorned, the dialogue sparse, and the characters richly detailed. The book is as good as anything Leonard wrote later in his career, when he was turning out one classic after another. This isn’t a curiosity, published simply to trade on the author’s name; this is a work of fiction that demands to be read. The fascinating introduction, written by Leonard biographer C.M. Kushins (Cooler than Cool, 2025), explores the novella’s rather tortuous history and answers some key questions, such as why Picket Line bears more than a passing similarity to Mr. Majestyk, the 1974 Charles Bronson film for which Leonard wrote the screenplay (and also the novelization). A gift for Elmore Leonard’s fans, and a wonderful introduction to the author—in case there’s anyone left who hasn’t read his work.
