A large majority of candidates (newcomers and incumbents) across the state and party lines opted into the system, embracing this new way to fundraise which puts everyday donors - not large checks and special interests - at the center of their campaigns.

Small donors significantly stepped up their participation with public funds on the table. An estimated 50,800 made in-district contributions (that’s twice as many as in recent cycles).

In its first run, New York State’s Public Campaign Finance Program transformed the state’s campaign finance landscape for legislative candidates + small donors. Candidates raised competitive amounts while relying largely on small donations from their constituents who know their communities best.

More than $1 billion in dark money – anonymous political spending – flowed to independent groups backing candidates on both sides. The largest pro-Harris super PAC was largely funded by dark money sources.

The numbers help tell the story: donors giving $5M+ to support presidential candidates spent more than twice as much as in 2020. Just 10 donors funded 44% of Trump’s support ($481M). Trump outsourced many campaign operations to certain super PACs, funded by the likes of Elon Musk.
