Proper Welsh lessons will shortly commence! It’s taken a while to get on the list- a mix of waiting lists and being scared. I’ve picked up words and phrases at work and can construct basic sentences but I need to keep pushing myself each day to learn something new. Wish me luck! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Michael O’ Mara celebrate 40 years in indie publishing. I’ve never met Leslie O’Mara but she sent me a really nice Biscuit when I helped her find a new sales and marketing assistant when I worked at The Bookseller and i never forgot it! 🍪 📖 #IPGAC

So pleased to see two titles from trade imprint of University of Wales Press, Calon, available in Waterstone’s pre-publication campaign. This will help us bring the stories of Wales to anyone who wants to read them in the UK and beyond. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 📚

Not sure if this is a sign to keep up my book trade history- my partner is signing in a choir concert (rock choir) in a bit, and I just walked into the graveyard of the church it is in. I looked down and look what greeted me, a @nationalbooktokens.bsky.social bookplate!

The Bookseller’s Association tree is real. It lives in the gardens of Stationer’s Hall and is the oldest plane tree in London. When the Hall was the granter of copyright if there were books or printed materials deemed ‘unsuitable’ they would be burnt near the foot of the tree.

The mermaid went on their first ever title published in 1936. This image was in the newspapers after the Penguin books takeover but the two companies worked together because Penguin bought lots of rights for their paperbacks from MJ 📚 (a clever business model).

This is one of my favourite letters to The Bookseller mag in the 19th century from a very disgruntled bookseller 🤣 📚 I remember clearly I had been going through pages and pages for a good couple of hours and this just made me giggle 🤭

An Albion Printing Press is always lovely to bump into- this one is at Victoria Art Gallery in Bath as part of a brilliant print-making exhibition. These presses were used to print books until the mid-1800s 📚

Today I donned the relevant robes at the Royal Festival Hall and graduated with a PhD in Book Trade History from UCL. It was an amazing experience and the culmination of almost a decade of research and writing. 📚

I went to the 35th British Book Awards (Nibbies) last night. It was lovely to see everyone in our trade win awards and for people to talk about the real impact books have on society at large. One thing I wasn’t expecting was to be credited in the history of the awards- much appreciated. 📚
