Absolutely brilliant article on Australia's neo-nazi movement and anti immigration protestors by two of Australia's best journalists Nick McKenzie and Michael Bachelard in today's Age. Highly recommended www.theage.com.au/national/den...
Dentist. Surveyor. Driver. Nazi. Unmasked extremists in everyday jobs
Nazi supporters are now openly marching through city streets as the group attempts to enter mainstream political discourse.

For those interested in transparency and open government, please see my thoughts on the FOI reforms announced this week by the Australian government. Published just now in The Conversation. #FOI #transparency #publiclaw

Yes, freedom of information laws need updating, but not like the government is proposing
The Albanese government’s proposed FOI reforms attempt to update decades-old laws. Some of it is needed, but other parts severely threaten government transparency.

Great article on protest in today's Guardian. Happy to have been cited in relation to the dangers of imposing a permit system on protestors.

After the extraordinary crowds at the Sydney Harbour Bridge march, advocates say political attempts to crack down on freedom of speech are out of step with community attitudes

Australia should recognise Palestine. To not do so only rewards Israel’s crimes
A Palestinian state cannot cure the historical injustices of Israel’s foundation, but it is a vital step towards remedying the past.

NSW Police is putting out the story that this powerful event came perilously close to disaster.
NSW Police were the ones who made the mid-event decision to block the northern end of the Bridge, instead of having a plan to funnel protestors safely off it and to train stations on the north shore. 1/
There were babies in prams, elderly people in wheelchairs, families, friends, organisations, unions, and a sea of Palestinian flags and keffiyehs. It was the largest and most moving protest I have ever seen. #MarchForHumanity

What stands out to me here is that Segal produces NO EVIDENCE to back up her assertions that antisemitism “has become ingrained and normalised within academia” & the ABC and SBS were presenting “false or distorted narratives” which inflamed antisemitism. #AUS #AusPol
There’s an overlap betw Advance campaigns & Segal’s views.
Each seek to silence protests, target Greens and activists as antisemitic, & blame the media, unis & “elites” (read, arts & cultural orgs) for rising antisemitism, without evidence.
Segal still hasn’t condemned the donation or Advance.
