NOAA’s National Weather Service holds the federal responsibility for tsunami warnings, and has historically been a primary supporter of seismic data collection in Alaska
NOAA cancels longstanding funding for seismic data collection crucial to tsunami warning systems
The Alaska Earthquake Center has long provided NOAA with seismic data for tsunami monitoring and warning purposes. That work will wind down in November, after the federal agency said it can no longer fund the contract.

As a young child, my mom knew I could read when she heard me laugh at the Washington Post comics one Sunday morning. This has been my hometown paper for half a century. But what Grossman says is painfully true.
The Washington Post doesn’t exist anymore. An undead creature is wearing its skin, and may appear similar at first glance, but don’t be fooled. The Washington Post that you valued is dead, and has been decaying for some time. I’m sorry.

From EEOB trick or treating in ‘19. The WH is the People’s House. It’s our collective heritage. All of us who walk its halls and meet in its rooms are but passing through — temporary stewards, with responsibility for respecting the past, serving the present, and preserving it for the future.

Time to show our support.
#FEMA folks are organizing a rally. It’s a ways off but let’s save the date. Share this shamelessly & let everyone know whether it’s your fellow FEMA employees or allies in the DMV area.

I know we say this a lot, but seriously, what is wrong with people???
Let’s catch this guy:

“The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is searching for a man wanted for allegedly decapitating a sea lion in Pacific Grove.”

Brian Kilmeade endorses euthanizing homeless people: "Involuntary lethal injection, or something. Just kill them."

The A Team — even though this new committee is 💯 political theater. None are afraid to call a spade a spade, including my Congressman, Rep. Jamie Raskin @raskin.house.gov
Hakeem Jeffries has appointed Eric Swalwell, Jasmine Crockett, Jared Moskowitz and Jamie Raskin to serve as the democratic members on the new January 6th committee. What great choices in my opinion, all four of these members will fight to make sure the truth is not whitewashed.

The 26% statistic does not not anticipate development (increased impervious surface), erosion/channel change, or climate impacts on rainfall and sea level rise.

#NOS and #OAR #SeaGrant. Zero budgeting OAR doesn’t kill just climate research! It hampers some of the most effective local-level extension agents who advise on many issues, including #CoastalHazards. They’ve earned the trust of the communities they serve.

So this Admin has abandoned investments aimed at reducing risks and *preventing* damage, and stated a desire for agencies to better support disaster survivors. Is this remotely consistent with that? Nope. Everyone’s on their own.
Trump pledged to help Appalachia recover from Hurricane Helene.

But projects to build housing & lower utility bills there have been downsized & paused as his EPA withholds $20B of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund grants.

And invest in the NOAA research and instrumentation that underpin and advance the NWS’ tsunami warning system.
Reminder that the Tsunami Warning Centers are part of the National Weather Service. It would be nice to have them fully funded.

Worse, it was folded into Sports. I’ve been a @washingtonpost print reader for nearly 50 years — my mom figured out I could read because I laughed at the Sunday comics. So painful to watch this happen.
A sad day for @washingtonpost readers as the standalone Metro section in print is eliminated and folded behind Style. As a lifelong Washingtonian and veteran of the Metro staff, I always admired the Post's commitment to covering Washington as a community not just a capital.
