Bernard Haitink, one of the two greatest conductors I've witnessed in my lifetime (the other was Claudio Abbado), was born on this day in 1929. Proud that on @theartsdesk.bsky.social we got together such a roster of impressive people who worked with him following his death in 2021.
'Everyone who played for him always gave their very best': remembering Bernard Haitink (1929-2021)
Few musicians get to stage-manage a dignified departure from the world.

Ice Reflections.

A drifting iceberg deep in a fjord in Greenland. It was a still morning with most of the iceberg’s congregating together, except this one. The massive fjord walls proved an excellent backdrop.

The decline and fall of period drama
Merchant Ivory Productions allowed a generation to dream that another world had once existed, infinitely more beautiful, infinitely more civilised. Their body of work remains unrivalled.

How Maria Callas Lost her Voice

Legend persists that the opera diva ruined her own voice for the sake of vanity and café society. But what she really sacrificed herself to was the music.

Antonín Kraft & CPE Bach: Cello Concertos
Jean-Guihen Queyras (cello), Ensemble Resonanz, Riccardo Minasi

Haydn wrote his D major concerto for Kraft, whose own concerto is a cracker, as is CPE's. Terrific performances, terrific record ❤️💙
