In his newsletter today, Cory Doctorow describes the AI bots that are being lined up to make critical decisions about our lives (medical, educational, financial) as “spicy autocomplete” which is magnificently withering, I think

The US stock market slump likely has only a little to do with the actual impact of the tariffs imposed to-date.

Instead, it's the market's assessment that the people in charge don't do their homework, don't consider consequences, can't implement, but refuse to let any of that slow them down.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Brexit it’s that adding trade barriers to commerce with our nearest neighbours has zero impact.

Americans using ammunition to measure productivity. They’ll do anything but use the metric system.
Here’s the email everyone is getting from OPM. Embarrassing stuff.

This. This.

This.
No matter what I do, I cannot convince the Google algorithm that I have no interest in cars or football. I've never clicked on either in my life and yet every day it'll try to encourage me. 'Go on. Be a man. Conform to your demographic.'

1. VAT is a tax not a tariff

2. It is not specific to US imports

3. Individual US states often charge a sales tax too

4. Trump is an idiot

Before we get a new runway can we make Heathrow a nicer place to be? It should be a welcoming showcase to a great country and less like a post-apocalyptic dystopian film set.

The Chinese have launched a new more efficient AI and wiped $500B off of NVIDIA’s share price.

Meanwhile Apple can’t make Apple Intelligence work unless you have an American accent.

Good to hear BBC News referring to Trump as ‘the convicted criminal’.

Trump just claimed to have won two world wars.

Were they involved in WW1 much? Might have missed that day in school.

I just rewatched Succession seasons 1-4 again back to back. This is massively reductive but basically the whole show start to finish is Logan (and briefly one other chap) offering Shiv a job that they then don’t give her and Roman delivering killer one-liners.

Many of us are reliving our youths with the new Retro Spectrum but are missing the randomness and ritual of loading by cassette. To fill this void I have created a compact random analogue panel (crap) that automatically adds an extra requirement to tweak the tape images you load.

Turns out our new smart plugs also unexpectedly read power consumption <geek happy noises>. From this I can tell that the Christmas lights in the kitchen (incandescent) consume around 6x the power of the tree bulbs (LED) in the front room. That’s a saving of 12.5p / day.
