Special Neanderthal Site at Noordsche Veld in Peest
A special Neanderthal site has been discovered on a plot near the nature reserve Noordsche Veld in Peest. Archaeologists from the Stichting Stone (Stone Age Research Netherlands) and volunteer archaeologists, in collaboration with the archaeological research agency De Steekproef, have found around 650 worked flint stones and other worked stones in recent years. This makes the plot in Peest the largest surface site of Neanderthal artifacts in the northern half of our country. The researchers also found more hand axes on the plot than in all of North Netherlands combined.

A belated #fieldworkfriday post. One of our last, or perhaps the last, survey of the season. This time with 15 men/women in total! Again on a #neanderthal site in #drenthe. Few middle #palaeolithic artefacts: flakes and a blade-like flake with a beautiful yellowisch patina. Photo's: G. Boekschoten.

Today in @NRC an interview w. Eelco Rensink of the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed and myself on the current state of research on #neanderthals in the #Netherlands. A rapidly growing number of #paleolithic finds but only few people to study the longest period of our prehistory.

Last week @rmoudheden.bsky.social received a wonderful donation of a Middle Palaeolithic tool from Nieuw Leusen, Overijssel. Identified by @marcelniekus.bsky.social as a potential Gekielte doppelspitze typ Karstein. The small dimensions testify to the intricate and refined tools Neanderthals made.

A few days ago we went surveying again on our middle #paleolithic site in #drenthe. Not many finds, but nevertheless a few interesting #neanderthal artefacts. A blade-like flake, a flake fragment of very fine-grained flint and a core or preform of a bifacial tool.

Last sunday we did our first survey this season at #Peest, our middle #Palaeolithic site in #Drenthe. Despite poor visibility and bad weather, we did manage to find 5 #Neanderthal flint artefacts: 3 cores and 2 flakes. Good start of the season! Looking forward to the next survey 😀 One of the cores 👇
