I'm confused. Why does the EU need another network of fact-checkers? Isn't the European Fact-Checking Standards Network enough?

Hopefully close enough... This Grokipedia entry on former Belgian PM Guy Verhofstadt quotes the attached Grok chat with an X user. There are more than 1,000 citations to Grok on Grokipedia.

Per @cj-robinson.bsky.social on CJR, just eight AI Note Contributors on X now make up about 5-10% of all helpful notes on a given day.

My sense from reviewing dissimilar entries is that once they were identified, Grok AI was told to recast the Wiki entry with a skeptical eye and add any references to bias and controversy.

Sidenote: Grokipedia includes more than 1,000 citations to conversations between X users and Grok. The seventh citation for the entry on former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt points to this chat asking Grok to "dig up some dirt" on Verhofstadt

Things get even worse when you focus on controversial topics (as defined by Wiki). 85.5% of Grokipedia entries in this category cites "generally unreliable" sources
November 13, 2025 at 1:44 PM
Grokipedia cites domains with a super low quality score (0.0 to 0.2) *seven times* more than Wikipedia.
November 13, 2025 at 1:42 PM
We used the Perennial Sources list maintained by EN-Wiki as well as a domain quality score compiled by Lin et al. to approximate the quality of sources cited by Grokipedia v Wikipedia.

Grokipedia includes 2.7 million citations to "generally unreliable", "blacklisted" or "deprecated" sources

Here is Grokipedia, for instance, citing InfoWars as an "alternative media outlet" that surfaced some interesting findings about the "Clinton body count" conspiracy theory
November 13, 2025 at 1:23 PM
The pilfering, however, is selective. On articles in Wikipedia's "controversial topics" bucket, the differences are far greater.

And that's where Grokipedia disproportionately adds low-quality sources, including Stormfront and InfoWars.

(Some of the entries are *verbatim* transcripts and don't even bother attributing. Here's one)

First off: Despite dismissing Wikipedia as an extension of mainstream propaganda, Musk was more than happy to use most of it to seed Grokipedia.

56% of the entries carry a footer attributing to Wikipedia and we find that those entries are indeed very similar to the original

So fun to see @indicator.media’s audit of AI labels being cited in places as different as Private Eye and The Hindu

One of the authors of the Madmani "bios" also wrote a book about Rob Jetten, the centrist who topped the polls in the Netherlands last week. AI did a little better rendering him.
