The real question is what happens on day 91.

Egypt represents 16.4% of asylum applications with only 1.8% recognition rates. A functioning bilateral agreement expanding legal labor pathways would do more than this amendment to prevent boats. (4/5)

The legal paradox is striking: How do you return someone to a country you refuse to document they’re from? Experts predict courts will throw this out entirely. Meanwhile, Sudanese women and minors are among those arriving, likely eligible for protection given the civil war. (3/5)

This is different from similar policies: Unlike Poland’s law, Greece’s amendment contains zero exceptions. No protections for unaccompanied minors or pregnant women. Everyone gets returned “without registration” to countries authorities claim not to know they’re from. (2/5)

The (next) German government should further de-risk the choice to return home and help Syrians set themselves up in their new surroundings. Much more likely to succeed than a 1,000 euro check.
