As someone with Connexin-26 (GJB2) mutations, I've managed to so far study most forms of hearing loss that do NOT involve GJB2.

As a cell biologist, I've managed to study ER-organelle related processes and disorders with minimal connection to hearing loss.

Now this paper drops.

Looking forward to some "inner ear evangelism" in ~30 minutes (signup link in comments)

The summary is actually pretty good
September 24, 2025 at 10:11 PM
2/2: ABRA, which can automatically analyze auditory brainstem response electrophysiology data from a broad range of mice with varying levels of hearing function/loss. New features in the open-source, free-to-use software (hosted on the San Diego Supercomputer Center!) increase usability and control.

Pleased to share updates for 2 deep learning papers:
1/2: VASCilia, which can automatically segment and analyze cochlear hair cell stereocilia bundles. We have added more features to the Napari plugin and some new data highlighting the power of our high-throughput automated 3D analysis approach.

Proud to announce that our superstar postdoc Yasmin Kassim was awarded a Schmidt AI in Science fellowship! Check out her recently updated VASCilia paper and then ponder the fact that this barely scratches the surface of what we’ve done and will be doing more of together 🙌🙌🙌

Mass spec imaging system being installed in the Sandbox today!!!

Absolutely beautiful paper with some awesome imaging of our AC-ER probe for monitoring ER-associated actin (PMID: 32778832) 🤯

I am unspeakably humbled and grateful for this honor - to "wear" Goeddel's name is simply insane. I can only promise to do my best to do it justice.

ONWARDS!!!

Sharing since I’m seeing lots of posts about this article and I myself was quite distraught when I saw it. Let’s see.

A beautiful tour through an AAV-PHP.B-GFP-transduced intact cochlea as visualized via lightsheet microscopy after tissue clearing. Magenta is a hair cell marker, yellow is a neuron marker, and green is AAV-GFP (relatively low hair cell transduction rate in this specific sample).

That worked!!!

Excited and honored to speak at the @royalmicrosoc.bsky.social meeting tomorrow where I'll talk about our latest AI tools. Meanwhile, check out Vijay&Arlo's Napari "bootstrapper" plugin for massively accelerated segmentation of multidimensional imaging datasets

If you're in the SD area consider joining for this QPI lunch and learn to know more about the kinds of things we are doing and building in the UC San Diego Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox. Label-free imaging is a giant part of the future of cell and biomedical research!

I am honored and grateful to announce our partnership with the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Association using our novel deep learning tools for analyzing organelle dynamics in CMT2A patient and animal models. This is a major passion project. I genuinely want to and believe we can help these patients.

Still optimizing further, but so far I'm blown away by the images we can get of an entire intact cochlea in just ~15 minutes with lightsheet microscopy. Sample prep and imaging by Xiaobo Wang and Julien Cicero.

I had a lovely time chatting with Sahana about this 🤯 discovery we just presented at #ARO2025. It was fun going down memory lane back to the original conversations I had with the inestimable @deolsonlab.bsky.social about the pilot experiment we did together.

More fun with patterned coverslips by Julien - this time it’s human patient derived motor neurons on this pattern that looks like a flag from some future space colony
February 27, 2025 at 1:55 AM
Come join us tonight at #ARO2025 to learn more about how AI is helping otolaryngology research. Superstar postdoc Yasmin and I will be presenting our latest work on AI for everything from synapse analysis (imaging and ephys) to stereocilia to epigenetic landscapes. Poster preview here.

Manor Lab reunion at #ARO2025 ❤️❤️❤️
February 24, 2025 at 2:20 AM
TFW you get updates from your superstar postdoc who stepped up to present at #ARO2025 while you’re on a plane ❤️❤️❤️

Is this really true? I have two R01's set to be reviewed on 03/05/25 and 03/13/25 and both of them are still listed as such on Commons?

Reason #495584872 I love my lab:
Less than one week after this paper was posted to our Slack channel, this sign was put up on our incubator.

We are embarking on making custom patterned coverslips for live cell imaging. Our postdoc Julien Cicero decided to make a pattern from a photo of me that they use for emoticons in our slack channel. In this image, my head is about 65 micrometers across (i.e. 0.065 millimeters).
