This is honestly my main complaint about the original series. The writers went out of the way to ensure that the main cast didn't interact with ANYONE outside of the group, and they just seem like coworkers than actual friends.

I don't read this series for the romance. I like the crafting, the setting, and the fact that people actually talk to each other to resolve stuff. I like that Dahlia and Volf are taking the scenic route to a relationship, because rushing a relationship is how the series started in the first place.
