Yeah but still a great song. Judging by the comments on YouTube, it appears that a lot of people get comfort from it when they're mourning someone or when facing their own deaths. So that was interesting, despite the meaning of the song on its face.

Oh wow. I would have loved to have seen The Smithereens in their heyday. One great record that was. Or the B-52s.

After roasting, cover w cold water & slip the skins right off. I cut them up & I add balsamic vinegar mixed with a little regular red wine vinegar. Add salt, pepper, & other herbs. Mix w feta cheese and basil for a great salad! Just give it a try with one beet and see if it changes your experience!

A brief thing in defense of beets: Many beet-hating folks I've known never had a beet roasted all to hell. You can't over-roast a beet. When you wrap well in foil w a lil water inside & roast @ 425 for 1.5-2 hrs, natural sugars develop. No more earthy/metallic taste. Just yummy sweetness. It works!

The salad (or dessert?) = No. Creamed potatoes: probably cubed boiled potatoes in cream sauce. Otherwise ok & boring. I'm surprised that chayote was a thing in 1943.

This is likely because they can't think outside their narrow boxes. When you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. And because they are in a real, actual cultic organization, they feel they have to protect its boundaries. It's "othering" by making everyone else into your shadow.

Well, lately, but after 9/11 the anti Muslim sentiment was awful. They're of a piece, imo. Connected to the baked-in anti semitism of white Christendom.
