I think fear is symptomatic of both

fetter, as in 'we suffer more in our imaginations', invoking attitude adjustment is the prescription, and that we disincenticize ourselves? fetter as in we spend too much of our time punching and clawing laterally? that distrust is pervasive and, arguably, systemic/endemic at this point?

the only way to justify the former, it would seem to me, is to make a moral claim, which is fine. It's even more attractive when you're honest about that

I'm inclined to agree, but I think we can also distill that down to the nature of unforeseen consequences. Unless you mean it's a deliberate coining of phrase to white wash the violence and exploitation?

As a thinker and a writer, there is literally not a single upper bound to how much thought and intentionality you can put into a piece that won't be repackaged as word vomit, either as an insult to the writer and their intelligence or an attack on their intentions
