This is almost exactly what I realized after 2016 election. It occurred to me then the US had been operating under a “gentlemen’s agreement” for over 200yrs & when someone tested that by kicking it in a few places w/o sanctions (b/c until then sanctions weren’t needed), they continued with impunity.
