AIO, Husband wants a job with ICE, I’m deeply uncomfortable Hi everyone. I (30F) and my husband (31M) got into a really hard argument last night and I genuinely need outside opinions because neither of us feels heard. My husband recently applied for a law enforcement position with ICE. I’ve been honest since the beginning that I’m not comfortable with that field and not just because of danger, but because ICE is extremely controversial: family separation, political tensions, and the emotional weight that comes with that work. I’m in school for nursing, and everything I’m working toward aligns with helping people. This feels like the opposite. I told him calmly that the idea makes me anxious. ethically, emotionally, and even professionally (I worry how it could reflect on me as a nurse later). He says I’m “making assumptions” and that ICE is just “another law enforcement agency taking criminals off the street.” He told me I could just tell people “my husband is a cop” if I’m worried. He also said that because we have different views on this, “there’s nothing to talk about” and basically shut down the conversation. After that, he barely spoke to me, gave me one-word responses, sat across the room from me, and acted cold. When I pointed it out, he said he’s “allowed to be in his feelings.” I agree, but it felt like he was punishing me for having a concern. For context, we rarely fight, but when we do, it’s always like this: I express a feeling, he shuts down, I try to fix it, and he withdraws even harder. I tried giving space. I tried being normal. I tried apologizing for hurting his feelings. Nothing helped. I feel like if the roles were reversed and I applied for a job he morally disagreed with he’d expect me to stop. Meanwhile he’s pushing forward with this and acting like I’m the problem for caring. He says we “can’t figure this out” because we have different opinions. But to me that’s exactly why we need communication. Am I being unreasonable for feeling this way? Is there a better way to approach this? And is it normal for someone to shut down like this every time there’s conflict? Any input is genuinely appreciated. I feel really alone in this. Additional context he is getting out of the military. He wants to provide and make sure we are financially secure, which I’m ok with. I just don’t agree with this choice. He is now saying that I can’t complain if he doesn’t have a job in February and if we don’t have health insurance to not blame him. We have 2 young kids as well. Am I overreacting?

It was such a pleasure to introduce people to Mbembe in a seminar I taught a few years ago and its super amazing to see his work continue to spread. It’s really incredible political theorizing. It comes as no surprise that Necropolitics has resonated with many trans and queer scholars + activists.

Even “Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS” has it front and center. This isn’t to say everyone has seen this movie but to point out that even sleazy exploitation film makers take pains to include a totenkopf for both accuracy and to highlight the pure evil of the title character to their audience.

Got to see Lene Lovich, the B-52s, and Devo last night! Lovich was an absolute treat who seemed to genuinely appreciate the crowd. Devo were fantastic & impressively high energy. B-52s were fun but it’s clear that their Vegas residency show has resulted in a more formulaic performance.

But they allow dogs inside the restaurant, not just in the patio area but upstairs as well. I was having a fantastic time until a persons dog started giving birth at the table next to us. The patron with the dog didn't even realize it, someone at the table next to us had to say "excuse me your dog just gave birth". I watched the dog finish giving birth, eat the umbilical cord, and then walk around with afterbirth on it, and it made me so nauseous. The woman after getting some help from the staff (getting a to go box for the puppy) seemingly sat back down and finished her meal. Unsure what happened after we left but am not happy that situation even happened. Giant health violation. She should've been out of there. There's even an outdoor space at the restaurant. Turned an amazing meal into a really gross experience. And for $140+ not worth it. Helpful 12 Thanks 5 Love this 3 Oh no 17

[Director] She was nervous about going on camera, because just sitting down and telling your story is a nerve-racking thing sometimes. But she was so great, and she actually ended up really loving the experience. At the end of it, she said it was kind of fun. She laughed about things, and I think it was really an opportunity for her to think about things a little bit more in depth. Every time I would ask a question, she would really have to think about some things, and I think that was really good for her.

I cried when Chris Matthews, owner of Santa Cruz’s famed progressive bar “The Poet and The Patriot,” died in 2018 and I kinda feel like crying now since they painted over the mural depicting Pádraic Pearse (the poet) and James Connolly/Séamas Ó Conghaile (the patriot)

So many people just aren’t self-aware of the stranglehold that policing has on their psyche until the cops drive a tank to raid their girlfriend’s house to locate a guy who lived there 5 years ago and even then it takes them a little bit longer.

This is totally unacceptable. And not only did they SWAT her house, but they SWATed the guy's other former residence, and guess what? Wasn't there either. What a freaking waste of resources, time, and money. Unbelievable. You'd think getting a search warrant would be a bit more difficult, or maybe they'd check if the person they're after still lives there. Doing this to people's homes, scaring the shit out of them, and then making them deal with the aftermath is some BS. I'm pro police too, but this is ridiculous. Even just staking the property and verifying the culprit is actually there before busting in. Anything. We're looking at at least $25K in damages. Her garage door was completely ripped off, her front door was completely ripped off, her house frame is bent, there are holes in the drywall, her inside door handles are broken...what a mess. I often post about the popularization of free birth + wild pregnancies with the claim that the only way to take radical responsibility during pregnancy & birth is to eschew all forms of medical care. There’s no joy in reading that the Free Birth Society founder just experienced a 41 week stillbirth.

I don't know my hemoglobin levels. I don't even know how much weight I've gained. I don't know my glucose levels. Or my amniotic fluid levels. I haven't taken fetal heart tones. I don't even know if I have a bifurcated uterus. Wait- I didn't even take a pregnancy test. I haven't had my urine or blood pressure analyzed. And that's just how I like it. Dear Free Birth Society Community, I am writing with the hardest thing I’ve ever had to share, to endure, to live through. I recently gave birth to a beautiful baby, stillborn at 41 weeks of gestation. Our son, our baby, was not born alive. There are no words for this pain, this experience, and all that it brings. Thankfully, our family is well supported, and we are deeply grateful. We are upside down in heartache, and also feel the halo of angels around us. I will be taking a suspended moment for myself and my family in this infinite well of grief before I continue with the always-personal offerings of my company. The MatriBirth Mentor Institute program, which was set to begin September 1st, will be postponed. Our current plan is to suspend MMI for one month. The 2-part workshop G.R.I.F.T. with Yolande will also have new dates that will be announced soon. We will contact all who purchased/enrolled separately with more details. My team will continue to release the weekly podcast. The first 20 or so episodes were recorded while I was still pregnant, which feels so painful and weird to air now, but these women’s stories deserve to be heard.
