i love HoT so much but i agree the flow is pretty bad. I remember being so frustrated at constantly being forced to stop playing story to earn masteries instead

if anything I find it more "problematic" that so many people seem fine with shallow, aesthetic approaches to death, gore, and abuse but want nothing to do with the real meat of the genre. the terror, the eroticism, the question of "what makes a monster, am (I) a monster," the loneliness, the abject.
