I worked in proximity & engaged genuinely with Diversity Saves for the span of 7 months, 5 emails, and 3 streams (2 charity streams & 1 Creator Showcase). This is where they stand on the subject. This entire conversation only happened because I decided to just say the quiet part out loud on the whole reason why I've been trying to offer my voice & experiences to a nonprofit focused on diversity. But when I use it, it's not the correct way that they want to engage in the conversation. Finally my word of caution: If you choose to engage with Diversity Saves because overall their mission aligns with yours, that's your prerogative & choice. But just know that this is how several sitting board members & their President chose to engage with me when I used my voice to call attention to areas they themselves are lacking in. BM2 response: • The world went to hell in Nov 24 & I "should recognize that they're doing lots of work" • How I "should realize 'punching out' and attempting to publicly shame folks isn't an effective means to an end" because I am also in nonprofit spaces. I responded: • I am not publicly shaming DS, I simply gave criticism in the same tone as the co-founder when he was criticizing the original company. • I noted the timeliness of the emails & how nothing came of it. • Concluding that they did in fact leave a disenfranchised group to the wayside while championing diversity via the original criticisms. • They had all but asked how I used my voice to call attention to the matter and I proved that I did. • My final note was that if they consider my responses "public shaming" they should look internally at what transparency looks like when criticism is brought up in this way. And finally another board member, BM3, enters and closes the conversation. • Thanking me for the feedback, sayong the board will "discuss together the insights brought up". • Offering to open their DMs to further concerns or to use the "ask a board member" channel.

For Context: That email was sent to the Diversity Saves email which connected me to the President & Co-Founder who I've mentioned previously. It was in response to an announcement post made in early November looking for Board Members & Non Board Members alike. I did not receive a response until late January, which was more than understandable with the state of the world & the holiday season as a valid delay. After nearly 2 weeks of waiting on a response to schedule an interview, since I filled out my availability the same day the initial response came in, I was notified that the Non-Board Member position did not actually require one and an apology for not getting back to me sooner. But when the email thread concluded, the last part of the response was essentially keeping myself and other interested parties in mind "to make sure we tap the resources available to aid in our future fundraising and outreach efforts we have planned for this year". It felt like this nonprofit didn't want my voice, just my labor. After all of this I fully think that gut feeling was in fact founded on a very common & harsh truth. I've worked in volunteer spaces as an admin or a mod for 10+ years & in nonprofit for nearly 3. I'm no stranger to the fact that those roles keep things running, but now I truly feel that DS only wanted that labor and not my voice specifically because they had other priorities.

Specifically as a Volunteer Non-Board Member. • A summary of who I am and how I use my presence in this hobby space as a sex worker trying to find places where we will be safe. • "Either you all pay attention and actively work to fix the same changes you're voicing frustrations about at your own community level, or you don't and choose to only focus on what others who aren't doing things exactly the way you'd like when you're not even in their community." • "So in this moment the call is in fact coming from inside the community and it's on you all the decide if it's worth taking criticism to heart and correcting it." Why bring this criticism up in a seemingly unrelated conversation? Because if you want to vocalize criticism on something like diversity, especially when your mission statement has a focus on BIPOC & Queer voices, you too should work at including sex workers & similarly disenfranchised voices in your very own community. You should actively be doing the work to educate yourself on how to protect those voices and provide a truly safe space. Why the tone matching? Because I speak to people with the same energy they speak in spaces. If my tone is seen as disrespectful, maybe check your tone and wording as well before you post something. Or simply be prepared to hear it echoed back to you when you're not doing the work you're asking someone else to do. Especially in a space as small & niche as this one. Enter another board member, BM2, with a more professional tone. I match that tone as well in my responses, keeping everything as clear and to the point as possible. My criticism was met by BM2: • saying the original topic towards the company being criticized was "punching up" • accusation towards me of "decaying people who are trying to build a safe space" • then saying how "my voice will be necessary" as they learn. • Along with a "I don't know what's going on in your life right now" and a statement on how Diversity Saves is working hard to "learn, protect, and create a welcoming space" because the world "is becoming less welcoming to us". • Followed by "you're welcome to work with us" with a focus on safety tools & conversation around sex work.

@/DiversitySaves, in my opinion, is not an actively safe space in the TTRPG Community and the way their board members handled criticism I brought up regarding lack of advocacy and representation of s*x workers within their channel space.

Yesterday, a conversation around big news in the TTRPG space was started and had in the "ttrpg chat" around a big company & diversity. Mainly around the same criticisms of the company being headed by an all white cast & crew with dismissive tones. When I corrected that a key member in the company was mixed race & how calling a mixed race or biracial person white by default is incredibly hurtful. As a white passing biracial Black person this is something i experience & have had to combat all my life and I was speaking from my own personal experiences. The co-founder of Diversity Saves responded with: • "oh I didn't know" • a comment about how as an all white majority the company needs to do better • "I'd never refer to a person of color - mixed or otherwise - as white" • finally the comment of "that still doesn't excuse the piss poor excuse done with diversity, in my opinion" in what I read as a casual but disrespectful tone towards the company. I matched the tone in my direct reply to his last statement: • quoting the phrase of "piss poor job done with diversity" in bringing up the topic of Diversity Saves' the lack of diversity & safety when it comes to advocacy & platforming sex workers in the ttrpg space. • Saying if they're truly championing diversity they should start that internally. • Because that's my opinion when it comes to my time with Diversity Saves since I had to be the one to introduce & lead the conversation around whorephobia & sex work in the Session 0 for a DS stream when I was simply a player with them for the first time. That last situation is one I have to undertake consistently as someone who is often the only sex worker at most of the tables I join. But giving that bit of education that I will undertake every single time if it means I can try to show that sex workers do belong in this hobby space. I'm usually understanding and patient with channels & GMs because if I don't do the work it's likely no one else will.
