I am relatively sure that S3 emitting events was at least somewhat inspired by our usage of S3 + EC2, and the sheer impact it had on their infrastructure at times. Same for Lambda (go watch the announcement keynote, it's telling). I/we had multiple meetings with the S3 prod team about events.

FWIW, as a former (and the very first) DevOps-like person at WeTransfer I can confirm that (at least during my time there) the files were off limits, always and absolutely. I am saddened to see it has come to this; it really pains my heart to see something so masterfully utilitarian go to shit.
