Lys rhymes with cis... which I am not.

Friendly neighborhood trans guy. Cat dad to Riley and Neo.

Reporter for Revelstoke Mountaineer and Discourse Community Publishing.

Prairie boy, former Island bound now mountain man. The brain is a neuro mess.
This will be in my top list of interviews this year. Yeah, I enjoy getting the quick and accessible news out to readers. But wow, do I love getting to listen as someone shares all the little details about their passion.
Revelstoke Mountain Resort's opening day is delayed, but that doesn't mean the trail grooming team isn't focused on creating the best routes possible for the season.

“We’re grooming every moment that the hill is closed,” Aaron Clarke, Revelstoke Mountain Resort slopes manager said.

Many things are bad. But total strangers I met at the park tonight offered me slices of watermelon, we talked about learning other languages, and it reminded me that kindness and little things still matter. They even insisted I take the last piece.

Mass revolt from queer authors in the UK after a major LGBTQ+ writing prize longlisted a self-proclaimed TERF.

11 authors and 2 judges have withdrawn from the Polari Prize. One of those withdrawals, that of June Thomas, is newly confirmed by our reporter, @evanurquhart.bsky.social.

My flavour of encephalitis-induced aphasia seemingly growing superpowers the more tired I am, coupled with struggling to sleep the warmer it gets is going to make summers as a journalist exponentially fun 🫠 And by fun I mean constantly telling interviewees, "sorry, I lost a word in my question."

Me straight up telling Steve, "I could probably chat with you for another hour about this. But [city communications coordinator, who was out in the bush with us] might get mad at us."

I've been cranking out some super cool articles recently, and I hate picking favourites. But this one is up there.
Steve Black, @cityofrevelstoke.bsky.social director of engineering has been trying to solve the log jam since joining Revelstoke in late 2019.

But with provincial waterway regulations and a majority of the debris coming from federal Crown land, finding a solution isn’t entirely cut and dry.

This is one of those stories where my sources said over and over again, "thank you so much for covering this!" And me wondering why *wouldn't* I cover something like this? When I tell folks @revelstokemountaineer.com focuses our reporting on community solutions, this is exactly what I mean.
Local business Forage & Fill partnered with Revelstoke's food bank to provide high-quality clothes for clients to select while picking up food. It's a way to provide a "dignified shopping experience" for clients and reduce the pressure on Revelstoke's thrift stores overwhelmed with clothes.

Most of the time I get to write news, and I love it.

Every once in a while I get to write a story, and I'm so grateful to folks for trusting me with those stories.
Peter Bernacki came to Revelstoke to help with his brother's construction business, then fell in love with the region, the wildlife and the community.

“We start to take this for granted. People come to visit from all over the world and remind us just how incredible this all is.”

the thing I hate most about that rfk quote is that autistic lives have value and worth and beauty and dignity whether they are able to do the things other people do or not. no one is defined by ability or lack thereof and to frame divergence as lack is monster stuff, utterly godless

Nothing about trauma recovery is easy or fair. But we cannot let that stop us from doing everything we realistically can to condition new ways of relating to ourselves & responding when we're triggered.

We cannot let how hard & unfair this is bully or dupe us into giving up.

Holy hell has visibility brought such a level of exhaustion these last couple of years. Grateful for @katelynburns.com's words as I try and keep from just entirely tapping out on this day. I have the odd safety of being quite "invisible" in the day-to-day, I don't get to hide away in that.
For TDOV, I questioned the need for a day commemorating our visibility in this year 2025, and suggest some alternative ideas www.patreon.com/posts/well-i...

Wait, as a journalist who has only ever written his heds and deks (and captions and SEO and all that) at all three publications he's worked at... who usually writes these things?
People are never going to learn that heds and deks are rarely written by the writer and are also not representative of the article are they sometimes I think link cards were a mistake

I was the definition of a glass closet case growing up. Unfortunately, the list of times little Lys was assaulted, harassed and policed for trying to access ANY bathroom is longer than I care to remember. You know what people would say to me in defense?

"What do you expect when you look like that?"
I don’t think people who can’t be convinced to care about the lives of trans women grasp the endgame here. The first time a cis woman is unlawfully arrested, or assaulted, for using the women’s bathroom, the response won’t be, “Amend this law.” It will be the very familiar, “What was she wearing?”
I asked the introducer of Nebraska’s anti-trans bathroom bill how she knows I was assigned female at birth. She conceded that she doesn’t know. The reality is, this bill would turn every public bathroom into a battleground where ppl are harassed and reported based on stereotypes.

(Today might just be me sharing trans writers looking at NYT and going, "you think we don't have extensive receipts of your bollux?")
1. Today, the New York Times Editorial Board published a piece titled "Trump's Shameful Campaign Against Transgender Americans."

I criticize the paper's attempt to wash away the paper's own culpability in ushering in an era of eradication-based policies.

Today the @nytimes.com sought to whitewash its central role in laundering anti-trans falsehoods and turbocharging anti-trans attacks nationwide. My reporting showed that editorial leadership was aware of this depravity which is why this disingenuous piece can’t erase the scale of what they’ve done.
