Suica has a penguin, ICOCA has a platypus, and Presto has nothing for a mascot. it's a ridiculous oversight that must be resolved posthaste. i recommend a raccoon, possibly one wearing a wizard's hat

Knives Out is a perfect movie. This rewatch is just affirming to me that it's even more brilliant than I remembered it being.

I actually think it’s the perfect choice. It’s a bone bleached by sun, the 500 year old styrofoam still intact on polluted soil, a noxious fume billowing into sky, corporate minimalist interior, a splotch on an x-ray, the afterlives of the present.
Pantone’s 2026 color of the year is technically not a color at all — meet Cloud Dancer, the first-ever white shade to receive the designation from the world’s color authority.
Pantone makes a surprising choice for its 2026 color of the year

As my partner often reminds me, it's not just "sufficiently advanced science" that is magic. All science is fucking magic!

This reminder is brought to you by installing a new astronomical light switch, and the earth magic of grounding cancelling out the fire magic of electrons.

My sister (who is 15): So is the term neurodivergent from the film Divergent?

Me: 🤯 nooooooooooo. Like a) they were books first! and b) nooooooooo

I will note that the Business Meeting next year will be held virtually before the convention and anyone with an attending or virtual membership can join the meeting online and vote. If they do it like last year, it would be one meeting a week spread out before the convention.

This is such amazing news! Now I'm the annoying gremlin coming in to remind folks that if they are attending WorldCon 2026 to PLEASE PLEASE vote for making this Hugo a permanent one (it'll be the last vote if it's successful!)
In Anaheim did Worldcon
a special Hugo Award decree
where sci-fi verse
with rhymes diverse
were celebrated as best poetry

(With apologies to Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

Yes, there will be a Hugo for Best Poem in 2026. The press release is out. The LAcon V will be updated later today.

It's said that I read a lot, but assuming I live to be 80 and keep up my current pace of ~110 books a year that's *only* 5,500 more books I get to read in my lifetime and that is... not enough books. Clearly people who think immortality would get boring are not readers.

This afternoon, I informed the Prime Minister of my decision to resign as Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture, Minister responsible for Official Languages, Minister of Nature and Parks Canada, as well as his Lieutenant in Quebec.
