I had the pleasure of meeting Mayor Sadiq Khan in Sept. 2016 as part of an interfaith event back when I was still in higher ed. It was an absolute highlight of my career as an educator. He was and is brilliant, kind, and engaging, and he truly cares about people.

The Pathfinder Quest cat sticker contest brings me so much joy! There are three brackets—one for multicolored kitties like the gorgeous Mina, one for solid-color cats (my late boy Izzy is there), and one for the glorious tabbies, including Giles.

We had so much fun sharing these. Please go vote!

I got a #Libby notice that one of my holds was finally available. When I hit “borrow,” it gave me error after error. Now I suddenly have to verify my card. 🤨

But… apparently that’s not working because the server’s “overwhelmed due to high volume.”

Went to refill my coffee. Stopped to ask Giles how he managed to both kick litter everywhere *and* get a piece of kibble all the way from the far end of the dining room to the couch.

Time for my monthly reading recap. September was so emotionally hard, I didn’t think I’d be able to read much.

Books were again my refuge, though.

These—especially A Resistance of Witches and @nikitagill.bsky.social’s Hekate—kept me afloat when I was sure I’d be washed away by grief.

Been dealing with a severe flare all weekend. Turns out that grief on top of a spike in seasonal allergens and *gestures to everything* really wears down an already compromised immune system.

IT IS NOT ENOUGH for me to be able to say "I am"; I want to know who I am, and in relation to whom I live. It is not enough for me to ask questions; I want to know how to answer the one question that seems to encompass everything I face: What am I here for? - Abraham Joshua Heschel Heschel is one of my great spiritual heroes. This question that he claimed as central to his life has been the lifelong question for me as well. It fueled my spiritual search, even before I was old enough to articulate it as such. From my earliest memory, faith by itself always felt hollow, meaningless. My mother would drag me with her to church on Sundays, and although the people were nice enough and I found value in things that were said there, ultimately they were to me just words. For many years, I assumed that this meant that I was simply not religious. What I didn’t realize until later was that I was indeed quite spiritual, and that those childhood years provided my best lesson in authentic spirituality. The lesson just didn’t happen in church. “Stories,” says Eboo Patel, founder and executive director of the Interfaith Youth Core, “are the way human beings understand and communicate our deepest values.” Stories have power. The narratives that we tell about ourselves and each other can divide us, or inspire and unite us. They can, as he notes, “build community out of people who would otherwise be strangers.”
